Skin Pigmentation

At birth your skin colour is predetermined but during life the skins pigmentation can change. The colouring of a person’s skin is determined by the level of melanin. The amount of pigmentation in your skin is related to your ancestry and sex, males tend to have more pigmentation regardless of heritage.

There are four main skin pigmentation conditions: albinism, vitiligo, melasma and solar lentigo. Albinism is genetic and incurable. The other three conditions are caused by sun exposure. Vitiligo is when lighter spots appear on skin is fairly rare and affects about 2% of the population. It usually affects dark skinned people and mainly people between 20 and 30. Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder that is characterised by hyper-pigmentation which are dark spots on the face, neck and arms which usually affects women. Solar lentigo is the name given to age spots and livers pots and usually affects people as they get older.
