Skin Needling
The principle of skin needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, is to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. It involves using a sterile roller comprised of a series of fine, sharp needles to puncture the skin. The device is "rolled" over the surface of the face to create many microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin, which stimulate your own body to produce new collagen.
This increase in natural collagen results in the skin tightening, less lines and wrinkles and a softening and reduction in scarring. The skin also becomes thicker.
An anaesthetic is used to reduce discomfort which can range from a topic anaesthetic cream to a local anaesthetic depending on the needs of the patient.
A typical person will require 4-6 sessions, and the procedure normally needs to be repeated once every 8-12 weeks. There is preparation required for this treatment which involves special skin care products for 6 weeks, and these need to be used afterwards as well for a period of time.
Skin Resurfacing by skin needling is a great alternative to Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing which literally involves burning the superficial layer of the skin, resulting in redness, swelling, discomfort and down time (recovery or healing time) of 6 weeks or more. In contrast skin needling has minimal down time and much less discomfort during recovery. Skin Needling is a more competitively priced treatment but just as effective compared to fractional laser treatment.
