Port Wine Stains

A port wine stain is a type of birthmark that gains its name from its reddish purple colour. It is caused by swollen blood vessels the problem is localised. The port wine stain can vary in size from a few millimetres to many centimetres. These birth marks tend to start off as flat and pink and become dark red or purple with age.

They usually cause no other symptoms other than appearance but some people who have the port wine stain near their eye can develop eye problems such as glaucoma or brain abnormalities like epilepsy but such complications only affect about 1 in 10 people with port wine stains.

The main treatment for Port wine stains is camouflage cream but this is quite often ineffective and there are cosmetic alternatives such as Laser treatment.
