Liposuction

Woman measuring tummy

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat from many different areas around the human body. Areas affected can range from the abdomen, thighs, buttocks to the neck, backs of the arms etc. Liposuction should be thought of as a sculpting procedure that can change the contours of your body or face rather than a means to lose weight, because typically, only small amounts of fat will be removed.

How does Liposuction work?

A tiny incision will be made and a tube called a ‘cannula’ will be inserted under the skin, penetrating the fat underneath it. The cannula is then pushed and pulled through the fat layer, which breaks up the fat cells and suctions them out by a vacuum pump.

Following the procedure you will notice the results very quickly. Your body shape will be remarkably different and the results are typically very positive.

Standard liposuction is a surgical procedure that is carried out under general anaesthetic and can take patients many weeks to recover from. Initially, patients face staying a night or two in hospital but bruising and swelling can last between 2-4 weeks. Most people return to work a couple of days after the procedure and patients may resume light exercise programmes after two weeks, although, to take part in heavier activities, patients ought to wait for a month. Patients also need to wear a rather large pair of tight shorts for a number of weeks to ensure that the treated area remains smooth.

Fortunately, there are non-surgical alternatives to traditional liposuction. Many people are not comfortable with being given a general anaesthetic and do not like the idea of being poked with a cannula or enduring a long and uncomfortable recovery time.

An alternative to standard liposuction which use different technologies:

Vaser LipoSelection – uses ultrasound technology to sculpt problem areas. Over 100,000 Vaser Lipo procedures have been performed across the world since it’s clearance by the FDA in 2002. The patented technique identifies fat cells and breaks them up whilst leaving other tissues intact. This treatment is far less painful than traditional liposuction and yields far less bleeding, bruising and swelling.

Smart Lipo – involves the use of lasers to break down fat cells. With Smart Lipo a 6w laser is inserted under the skin by the doctor, but Advanced Smart Lipo uses a 10w laser. Advanced Smart Lipo is different as a small vacuum is used to remove the fatty residue where as with normal Smart Lipo, fat is left to be safely absorbed by the body.

XP Laser Lipolysis – this technique has been hailed as revolutionary as it is minimally invasive considering the purpose of the treatment. The same laser system for Smart Lipo is used but the difference is the power that is used. This means that there is less bruising and skin tightens over your new body shape.
