Ageing Skin
Why does skin age? Well actually about 80% of skin ageing is caused by the sun. Skin begins to look aged because as you get older you lose adipose tissue; this is the fatty layer beneath the skin which keeps the skin looking good. As we age we lose adipose and so skin itself begins to sag. The skin when stretched is still good skin. The damage is caused by the sun. Some of the other causes which damage the skin are smoking, pollution and stress.
Some of the characteristics of ageing skin is that it is thinner this can sometimes mean thread veins are more likely to bruise or break leaving facial skin with a reddish tinge. Skin tends to sag as it loses elasticity; this is due to a lack in elastin and collagen that we lose as we get older which also makes the skin wrinkly. The sun tends to cause some age spots the name given to spots of skin where pigment cells in the skin have increased due to a cluster of freckles and liver spots. Aged skin tends to be dry as it has fewer sweat and oil glands.
